A Glimpse Into Her Roots
Some of you may have seen a show or game I voiced or listened to my music and wondered about my history…. I was born in Minneapolis, MN, the second daughter of Ronald & Catherine Mattson. My Mom is the oldest of 10 from Duluth, MN, the beautiful, popular cheerleading captain and class secretary in the choir. She loved school, music, and most of all, family. She danced on Duluth’s American Bandstand and made a record when she was 7. All her sisters can sing and the boys always bring laughter and love. Her mother, Patricia, (my namesake), was sharp as a tack to 99. She worked on B24 bombers during WWII where she met my grandpa. They raised 10 children! Grandma tap-danced and wrote poetry & songs. She requested I write a song for when she passed, and she wanted it called Going Home. So, I did just that! She lived to 99 and “Going Home” was played at her celebration of life.

Melodic Heritage
My dad was the middle of three boys, also raised in Duluth, MN. He was an amazing self-taught guitar player and singer who played in a band called The Vibrations. They warmed up for the Beach Boys. He also got to jam with Bob Dylan before Dylan was successful. People said that my dad “could just play unbelievably by ear” & “he had a superstar pitching arm“. His mom, my grandma Irene Rodorigo -Mattson-Enrico, also sharp as a tack to 93, sang in her youth, played the organ, and did a record called the Woodpecker Song. Grandpa Cal played the French horn and served this country like several others in the family. My dad’s youngest brother Mike Mattson, still plays and sings beautifully in Duluth, MN, today. His oldest brother Dennis and his son Brent, both creative souls, also get the “resident genius” titles! RIP Dad, Gram and Gramps, and Karen Mattson! All jamming and hanging together in the Sky.
From Then to Now
I was honored to have some really nice things written about my history ….
Mattson was destined to be using her creative gifts! She was just 6 yrs old when she decided to perfectly imitate Lily Tomlins, Edith Ann, & Ernestine characters in her grade school talent show, to a standing ovation. She began singing at 8 and after auditioning with hundreds of other talented children was tapped by the Twin Cities highly respected Children’s Theatre Company & School through Jr. High. She continued her music and theater studies at MacPhail Center for the Arts and The Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis and was signed to her very first production deal by Dez Dickerson of Prince and the Revolution.
The Los Angeles Music Connection, wrote, “This girl has a god given talent that can’t be taught or learned “. Atlantic City & Las Vegas saw Patty Mattson on the Marquee as part of the dance extravaganzas “Let’s Dance” & “Swing, Swing, Swing” produced by the legendary choreographer Anita Mann, and she spent years singing with the 8-33-piece band LA Beat / Leonard Neil Productions. There was Ruperts Orchestra in Puerto Rico with The Temptations & Sheena Easton and most recently with The Westside Band LA. Patty has written & executive produced 4 CDs of her original Music with the expert music production & mixing of Grammy Winner Rob Chiarelli of finalmix.com, as well as the wonderful production and musical skills of Simone Sello, not to mention Michael Becker who is also a renowned photographer! You can listen in the player under Original Music.
With her Team at Atlas Talent LA & NYC, There’s just no telling what will come next for this versatile Voice Talent.
Echoes of Influence
My mom had hip music on all the time when we were growing up. From great old R&B like The Spinners, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Parliament, and The Brothers Johnson. To Rock and Roll like The Beatles, Creedence, Bread, Carly Simon, Doobie Brothers and more! Her favorite band is Journey; she loves Steve Perry. Her wide-ranging love of music was a big influence. My biggest influences were Barbara Streisand’s A Star Is Born, Anne Wilson of Heart, Bonnie Raitt and Aretha, but I love so many greats - Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Earth, Wind & Fire, Prince, Doctor Dre - I LOVE “California Love” then there’s Bob Segar, Van Halen, Allman Brothers, Bruno Mars, Neil Young, Ohio Players, Teddy Pendergrass I really could go on and on, and on and On….. ask anyone that knows me. Hahahaha
Theatrical Beginnings
In late grade school, I fell in love with Barbra Streisand’s work on the “Star Is Born” soundtrack. I copied every lick she sang, and my sister’s friends used to come to listen to me sing “Watch Closely Now” and “Woman in the Moon”. Funny! I continued singing in talent shows doing Heart and Streisand, then The Blues. In the 6th grade, my mom had me audition with hundreds of kids at The Children’s Theatre Company & School in downtown Minneapolis. I got in, being one of three out of 500, woo-hoo! I went to school there from 7th through 9th grade. What a great experience! I probably should have stayed in the theater but, alas, I wanted to play in a rock band too.
Memories of the Stage
I ended up playing in a couple of bands at 15. My first was Blamo. We played at the Senior prom when I was a Junior. That band morphed into Little Louie and The Units. We played around Minneapolis at the Uptown Bar, Riverfest, and in Brainerd, MN, at Section 6, a huge camping spot in the woods. Those gigs were crazy! We even got on the KQRS Homegrown Album, and KQ is still one of the big rock stations in Minneapolis.
Thankfully, I made it through! I went on to study Voice and Breath Control with the ever-amazing Oksana Bryn, as well as Jazz theory at "Mac Phial Center for the Arts". Oksana gave me invaluable tools for vocal maintenance that I've periodically shared with others and still use to this day. At one point met the drummer from the band Maserati at a bar where all the big players in the Minneapolis music scene played like Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Jellybean Johnson, Marc Brown, Shaun LaBelle and others. (They'd sit in on different nights). I ended up doing a couple of recordings with him. One of the songs, "Body Talk" I did a video for but I always thought I should have saved it for the song "Do You Love Me" after that. Funny! I’ll have to upload that for you all. Subsequently I was so excited to get signed to my first Production Deal with Dez Dickerson of Prince and The Revolution!
Musical Crossroads
I was trying to find myself as an artist, and I met a super-talented drummer named Stokley Williams, who was in a band called “Mint Condition” with his besties Roger Troutman Jr, Homer O’Dell, Larry Waddell, Keri Lewis, and later Rick Kinchen took Keri’s place and, Jeffrey Allen joined. Stokley and I wrote some funny, funny songs! I did some demos for Mark Brown/Brown Mark, who played bass with “Prince and The Revolution” and was working with Chico Debarge. My first Producer was Dez Dickerson of the Revolution and “Little Red Corvette” fame. Dez was and is a talented, super kind, and spirit-filled person! While we were working on those demos, I was invited to L.A. to sing on a record for “The Boys Club”, a duo of Gene Hunt of “The Jets” and Joe Pasquale. I ended up staying in L.A. I do wonder what might have come of my project with Dez had that road been followed… We often say “Everything for a reason.”
A Variety of Ventures
I worked a variety of jobs while I sang on demos, did Jingles, Commercials, and some Television, and sang on records for “American Idol,” “Nona Gaye,” “Holly Robinson,” & “Lisa Wong” in the UK for the amazingly talented Derek Bramble of “Heatwave” fame. I placed a couple of songs, worked, and performed in bands and production shows - 1 of the many gigs we did was Katherine McPhee’s wedding, a star-studded event. David Foster and others like Mandesa, Kelly Pickler, and Kara DiGuardi sat in. Minneapolis-based Rupert’s Orchestra or Synergy played fronting the Temptations, Sheena Easton and Louise Mandrell. Some stunning Minneapolis musicians and singers like Debbie Duncan, Gwen Matthews, and Jenny Sanford … One of my favorite bands was The Painkillers with Rob Chiarelli, Michael Becker, Perry Senn, Derek Nakamoto, and Scott Rowe, which later became The Westside Band.
Voicing Legends
I just kept doing session work, parodies, and gigs, and at one point, It looked like I had a development deal with BMG Records; alas, our A&R contact left the label, the impressive writing and production team for that project parted, and…. On the shelf, that went. When I FINALLY completed my first original record, “The Road,” with Rob Chiarelli, I was so excited to have some of my own original music produced at that level.
From Dreams to Reality
You can check out everyone’s contributions to my music on my CD Label, it’s also on my website in the Store if you click the link above each release that says Lyric Booklet. I have to point out that, Derek Organ, one of the industry’s most amazing drummers, who’s toured with Janet Jackson among others, was mistakenly omitted on the original hard copy CD musician credits, AHHHHH, so sorry Derek! That is corrected online. Lifelong dreams do come true. To be making a living creating characters and using my voice in the studio is such a blessing! Having my original music recorded and out there in the world is a cherry on the sundae of life! It’s just such an honor to be part of people’s creative process and to make my contributions with such talented writers, directors, producers, graphic artists, engineers, and casting directors. There is so much talent that goes into bringing these projects to life.

Things do come together when they are supposed to, sometimes later or differently than you expected. "Never Say Never," as my sweet angel guide, best friend, and muse, my beautiful mom Kitty always says! Without her endless positivity, encouragement, and pure belief in good things … I wouldn't be. "Dear Mama," off my record, "Throwdown" is written for her. "Daddy" is off the same record for my dad. Here's to magnifying what's best in all of us!
